| Blinatumomab (Blincyto) in India |
Blincyto is a Bispecific T-cell engager (BiTE) immunotherapy used for the treatment of certain B-cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Since it works differently from chemotherapy, it has led to curiosity and confusion. These confusions lead to misconceptions to patients, so here’s the article to burst the myth and present the facts.
MYTH: Blincyto (Blinatumomab) works for all types of leukemia
FACT: Blincyto is indicated in adults and children above one month old with:
CD19-positive B-cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in first or second complete remission with minimal residual disease (MRD) greater than or equal to 0.1%.
Relapsed or refractory CD19-positive B-cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).
CD19-positive Philadelphia chromosome-negative B-cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in the consolidation phase of multiphase chemotherapy.
MYTH: Side-effects of Blincyto are same as that of chemotherapy
FACT: The side-effects of Blincyto are not the same as that of chemotherapy. The side-effects of Blincyto are cytotoxic release syndrome, neurological toxicity including Immune Effector Cell-Associated Neurotoxicity Syndrome and infections.
MYTH: Blincyto weakens the body’s immune system
FACT: Blincyto doesn’t weaken but modulates the body’s immune system. Infections can occur during the treatment, so careful monitoring is required and prophylactic medications have to be given.
MYTH: Patients are hospitalized throughout the Blincyto
FACT: Patients are hospitalized only during dosage schedules for continuous monitoring and noticing any severe adverse effects. Once the patient is stabilized with the treatment, the treatment can be taken in the home complying with all the protocols.
MYTH: There is no benefit of taking Blincyto before stem cell transplantation.
FACT: Taking Blincyto before the stem cell transplant is very beneficial because the chances of long-term remission increases and enhances overall treatment outcomes.
MYTH: Blincyto is extremely painful treatment
FACT: Blincyto is administered in the form of intravenous infusion. Sometimes, its side-effects may be a little disturbing but not the actual Blincyto treatment.
MYTH: Discontinue the treatment permanently in case of neurological problems.
FACT: In most cases, the nerve related problems are temporary if noticed in the early stages and can be reversible. Prompt intervention always reduces the risk of long-term consequences.
